Assessment District Approved; Redevelopment Agency To Create Construction Drawings and Bid Out Work For Phase 1 of Landscaped Medians on West Washington (Wade St. - Beethoven)

Renderings: before & after

The Culver City Redevelopment Agency is moving forward with the construction of landscaped medians along a portion of West Washington Blvd. as part of its efforts to improve west Culver City.

On June 23rd, a majority of the commercial property owners between Wade Street and Beethoven  approved a landscape and lighting assessment district to fund the maintenance of medians in that area. That approval was a precondition by the Redevelopment Agency prior to its funding of their construction.

Subject to approval of additional assessment districts along the way, subsequent median segments will be built  going eastward towards Centinela and beyond.

The adjacent graphics are renderings of the landscaping design that has been approved. The medians have been designed to maintain access into and out of all side streets.

While the economy has temporarily stalled the Redevelopment Agency-initiated projects on the "Baldwin Motel Site" and the north corners of Washington/Centinela, the Agency has been working on other elements of its improvement plan for the area. In addition to the medians, it has received a great reception from local businesses and commercial property owners for its commercial facade improvement grant program.

You may have noticed several area businesses painting, landscaping, and otherwise improving their buildings, and you will see more over the next couple of months. The Redevelopment Agency is offering businesses and property owners matching grants of up to $10,000 per storefront to make improvements to the exterior of their buildings.

While the financial outlook is grim for the City of Culver City as it is for almost every other town in California, the Culver City Redevelopment Agency's funding for its projects and programs is currently stable and sufficient. The Agency is funded through a designated portion of commercial property taxes that can only be used for limited purposes. Meanwhile, FYI: in case you're wondering what's going on at the old Shakey's Pizza restaurant, it will be reopening as a Pitfire Pizza Company restaurant. I've had their pizza - it's great! Still no word on what will become of the Crest House...
